The Roger Williams Volleyball team improved its winning streak to 16 games as they defeated the Salve Regina Seahawks three to two last Wednesday night at the Recreational Center.
The Hawks haven't lost since September 17, a three to one loss to Bowdoin, and have been impressive heading into the playoffs next week. The win improved them to 25 to three, and six to zero within the Commonwealth Coast Conference under first year head coach Rob Mullowney.
Before the game the team honored three of their graduating seniors, Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez, Marybeth Torpey, and Natasha Sopchak in front of parents, teammates, and a rambunctious hometown RWU crowd.
Despite being down after the first set, the Hawks battled back to win the next two. In the fourth set, with RWU set to win, the Seahawks battled back from 23-17 to tie the game and eventually win the set. In overtime, the Hawks dominated, finishing what they started by a decisive score of 15-6.
Senior Marybeth Torpey led the Hawks with 22 digs and 16 kills. Kelsee Loche contributed with a team-high 23 digs, and Emily Lebowitz led the team in helpers with a staggering 49 assists.
The team finished the season strong, getting the victory in their season finale against the University of New England last Saturday 3-1. They now enter the first round of the playoffs as the top seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, and will face Western New England in the campus recreation center tonight, Nov. 3.
