Steven Carnevale was at his first semester at Curry College. Despite choosing to attend the school, something just wasn't right there. "I couldn't see myself there for four years," Carnevale said. "I really missed competitive running."
That burning fire that made him want to run again was a big factor in his decision to transfer. "I looked into some other schools that had [running], and fell in love with this school's campus and coach [Sean Livingston]," Carnevale said. This is when he decided to transfer to Roger Williams University and return to running competitively.
As a sprinter in high school, Carnevale eventually progressed into more of a distance runner. "My senior year of high school I just kind of decided, why not try cross country?" he said. "I just absolutely fell in love with it."
That love has gone a long way for the junior captain, as he helped lead the Hawks to their 11th-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship last Saturday, October 29. Steven played a big role in helping RWU win the meet by finishing 11th with a time of 28:29.
After a "rough" sophomore campaign according to his own account, Carnevale was looking to rebound in his junior year.
"I wanted to try and improve upon that [year] in any way possible," Carnevale said.
Despite the fact that Carnevale is now fully entrenched at RWU, Curry College did offer him one thing–a major. "While I was taking classes at Curry, I really got interested in the public relations field," he said. "After taking a few intro classes [at Roger Williams] I just fell in love with it even more.
As a junior public relations major and captain of a champion cross country team, conventional wisdom would say that Carnevale has enough going on in his life. But a busy schedule doesn't stop him from getting even more involved on campus. Carnevale helps with the campus radio station, WQRI, and also finds time to be a student advocate on campus.
With such a busy schedule, Carnevale definitely has his hands full. All that he has accomplished thus far, there's little reason to believe that he can't continue to do even more in his final semesters as a Hawk.
Being involved with so much on campus, as well as his 24-hour commitment to the cross country team, it must for be difficult for Steven to make all of his deadlines. Good thing he's a runner, huh?
