Students in need of rides home should be taken more seriously

Abstract:
Dear Director Blessing and Student Affairs,

While the majority of Roger Williams students traveled home for Easter, or a sumptuous Passover feast, a few friends and I remained on campus, content to watch tumbleweeds blow idly by deserted dorms. To temper the loneliness, we took a trip to Jacky's Galaxy....

great article teddy!
I really liked this opinion piece compared to the other recent ones.
I think it was well thought out and professional all while keeping the argument fairly neutral. It would be great to see more stories about policy violations from people who say they are there to help us

The Web Editor drinks a scorpion bowl and can't believe he gets intoxicated. Then he and his drunk pals chase a campus bus screaming like a bunch of drunken fools expecting the driver to pull over and give them a lift--if the driver even saw them to begin with (Remember, the web editor, Teddy, and his friends were inebriated). Best of all, the web editor says the campus police and public safety would be to blame if he chose to drive home under the influence and suffered injury.

His exact words:
"If we had driven that night and injured ourselves, or somebody else, the blood would be on Public Safety's hands."

It's a sad day for RWU when the one of the school's newspaper editors absolves himself and all of his fellow students from personal responsibility.

"Who has deceiv'd thee so oft as thy self?"

You hauty holier harsh knowitall have overly condemned the decent good valid essence of the editor's message despite his personal human shortcomings and faults he did not really absolve himself entirely from personal responsibility as you allege!

In response to "Poor Richard":

I am fully aware that my friends and I did not make the best choice by driving in the first place, and I am more then ready to acknowledge my idiocy. I understand quite well that drinking gets you drunk. However you seem to ignore the fact that Public safety is charged with properly handling idiots as well as those who are more intelligent. Just because we were dumb does not give Public Safety license to not do the job for which they are paid-- to protect the students (hence the term: safety).

And you are correct, the blood would be on our hands more so than Public Safety's, however I ask you this:

If you can help somebody without endangering yourself, and you choose not too do so, do you not deserve any responsibility for their resulting plight?

I don't mind if you point out my mistakes, but too ignore the mistakes of others in your critique undermines the credibility of your comment.

I also have had many problems with shuttle drivers and public safety.

twice in the past two years i have gone on to a shuttle to realize shortly into the ride that my drive was intoxicated under the influence of some other drug, or just unfit to drive.
In the first case i was riding the shuttle across the bridge at night, and the shuttle ended up on the wrong side of the bridge. so when i got the the shuttle i promptly called public safety to inform them, and to my knowledge nothing was done.

One another occasion right before winter break this year i was on the shuttle going from Almeida to State St. with the male shuttle driver who usually drives to Baypoint in the evenings and his driving was so erratic i moved a few seats up to sit behind the driver as it appeared he was nodding his head as if he was falling asleep or passing out. while going down Bayview ave the shuttle veered so far to the left side of the road we got extremely close to the cars parked on the street, and right before i went to yell something before we hit them, at the last second the driver realized what was going on and cut the wheel bringing us back close to the right lane. he continued to weave through the road until i was dropped off. After i stepped off the shuttle and onto the road i immediately called Public Safety and told them what happened and tried to make them understand how serious the situation was. i also told them i had made a call like this before and i was unaware if anything happened, and the public safety officer assured me they would immediately speak with the shuttle driver and take the appropriate measures.

The next time i was on the shuttle the driver who almost ran us into park cars was at the wheel

thanks for listening and protecting your students Public Safety! i Don't know what we would do with out you other than have a better use of our money we spend on your salaries
